First station[]
( NOTE: The call letters originally assigned were WDAM. Western Electric objected to the call sign, and suggested WECO. However, at that time the Commerce Department did not give customized call signs and issued the call letters WEAF, which were the next call letters available at the time in alphabetic sequence.)
- Date: ...June 1, 1922-November 2 [or 6], 1946 ( NOTE: According to one source, station began on August 16, 1922. However, the station is shown in a Commerce Dept. Radio Xervice Bulletin dated June 1, 1922 and in another listing dated June 30, 1922. Apparently, on August 16, all of WBAY's facilities were shut down and WEAF took over WBAY's staff. What appears to be the situation is that licenses under both the WBAY and WEAF call letters continued both before and after the August 16 date.)
